EMD Serono in Billerica, MA is seeking a Senior Scientist, Immunology. The Senior Scientist will be responsible for therapeutic target discovery, target validation and will serve as biology lead or potentially project leader for drug discovery projects in the autoimmunity/inflammation disease area. The Sr. Scientist will provide, maintain, and grow expertise in human immunology as applied to both drug discovery and translational efforts through working collaboratively with a group of scientists to develop and conduct in vitro cell-based assays and biomarkers studies to further our understanding of human autoimmune diseases and evaluate potential drug candidates.
Responsibilities:
- Discovery and validation of therapeutic targets as biology champion
- Lead and progress discovery project and coordinate cross-function efforts to meet milestones
- Supervise, develop, and conduct cell-based assays, e.g. complex primary cell co-culture assays or cell line assays, to assess the biological roles of new targets, determine mechanisms of action, identify pharmacodynamics markers, and evaluate drug candidates
- Conduct translational biomarker studies using samples from patients with autoimmune diseases to support pharmacodynamics and target engagement biomarker discovery
- Prepare and present experimental results and research plans to senior leadership team
- Operate state of the art laboratory equipment such as Flow Cytometer, MSD/EnVision and QPCR-based expression platforms as needed
- Manage external collaborations with academic institutions and CROs
- Lead or contribute to scientific publications through internal or collaborative research
- Closely work with members in TIP Immunology to support departmental goals
Who You Are:
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD in Immunology, Cell Biology, or other related Biology Field
- 3+ years of postdoctoral industry or academic research experience with a track record of independent research accomplishments evidenced by publications in peer reviewed journals
Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise in the subject area of immunology and autoimmune or neuroinflammatory diseases
- Prior experience in either biologics or small molecule drug candidate assessment
- Ability to work independently, multitask, and collaborate in a matrix environment
- Experience using an electronic notebook to maintain records
- Specific knowledge and hand-on experience in the following areas are highly desirable:
- Immunological cell-based assays, especially human primary cell isolation, phenotyping (flow cytometry) and functionals assessment in standard immunological assays (MLR, CTL, proliferation, apoptosis, cytokine assessment etc.)
- Molecular Biology: DNA/RNA isolation, QPCR, Western blotting, NanoString, NGS
- Excellent presentation skills (written and oral) and ability to present data in different forums
- Proficiency with computer software: GraphPad Prism, BD FACS Diva, Flow Jo, Microsoft Office
